On any given night in Houston, as many as 40 children in foster care have nowhere to sleep as they await a more stable placement. This number is steadily increasing, and we must find a sustainable solution.
These children (mostly teens) must be supervised by a caseworker 24/7 until a more permanent home is found. Some may be without a placement for weeks at a time. Temporary housing options for these children are extremely limited. As a result, many are living in office buildings and hotels. These kids are in the midst of a crisis, having experienced significant loss and trauma. They need a safe place to stay, but they also need warm meals, crisis intervention, mental health professionals, educational opportunities, and mentor relationships.
We believe every child deserves a loving and stable home, not to mention a safe place to stay while they wait for that home. We are working with DFPS and other community partners to identify home-like environments suitable for housing these children. Additionally, we are providing meals, tangible items, crisis intervention, and trauma counseling for both children and caseworkers.
